After 10 years as a novel writer, I’ve developed my first confirmed case of severe writer's block. Writer's block is basically when your brain shuts down and takes your imagination with it. You walk around the house starting ideas and even sitting down at the computer to write the book only to get back up because you ordered something from Amazon and the doorbell just rang. You’ll do anything to find a way to walk away from the computer. Little snippets of thought stay just out of reach in your mind, not allowing you to develop a decent story out of the little snippet. Because that’s what a story begins with. A little thought that keeps rolling and rolling until you have a paragraph, and you just can’t fucking believe it. Then you’ve got a couple of pages, then chapters, then holy shit you wrote a book!
Every writer develops writer's block at some time. Usually, it lasts for a couple of weeks or maybe even a month. This was my 6th month. Six months locked in pure uninspired hell. It’s hard to compare this feeling with anything other than getting laid off from work. Or maybe you and your brain getting a divorce. It just seems like the important connections in the brain have become detached.
Sometimes the answer moves in next door. She comes with 3-year-old twins and a busy life. But her life is just what he needs to get him out of his writer's block.
